Why We Exist & What We Do

We believe the people most often counted out have exactly what it takes to build something meaningful.

Recover Appalachia is a nonprofit organization working at the intersection of recovery, re-entry, and economic opportunity in Appalachian communities. We exist because too many people leave treatment or incarceration with real determination and not enough support for what comes next.

Our answer isn't another job training program. It's something more foundational: helping people develop the mindset to navigate uncertainty, solve problems, and take ownership of their own futures. We call that entrepreneurial thinking — and it goes far beyond just starting a business.

What We Mean by Entrepreneurship

When most people hear "entrepreneurship," they think startups. Pitch competitions. Being your own boss.

Those things might be involved, but they are not the heart of what we're talking about.

We define entrepreneurship as the self-directed pursuit of opportunities to create value by solving problems for others. The entrepreneurial mindset is a learnable way of thinking and acting that builds resilience, adaptability, and agency. Whether someone is entering the workforce, rebuilding relationships, or simply trying to stay grounded after years of instability, these skills matter.

This is what we teach, and it works whether or not someone ever opens a business.

Who We Work With

We serve individuals navigating some of life's most difficult transitions: people in recovery from a substance use disorder, returning citizens rebuilding after incarceration, and community members facing economic uncertainty in a region that has long been underserved.

We work in partnership with treatment providers, re-entry organizations, workforce development programs, and community nonprofits, integrating mindset training into the ecosystems that already exist rather than asking people to start over somewhere new.

What We Do

Our programs combine structured training with reflection, storytelling, and peer connection. We use frameworks like the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program and the Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile to help participants develop a clear sense of who they are, what they're capable of, and where they're headed.

But we also know that a single program can't do everything. That's why we invest in what happens after: alumni networks, long-term outcome tracking, and continued engagement that keeps people connected to community and support long after a cohort ends.

Alongside our direct programming, we are building a regional thought leadership platform that includes our Reclaiming Agency podcast, a professional learning webinar series, and community convenings to shift how the broader field thinks about recovery, re-entry, and economic opportunity in rural America.

Why Appalachia

Appalachia has never lacked resilience. What it has lacked is investment — in its people, its infrastructure, and the story told about who lives here and what they deserve.

We are unapologetically local in our practice and national in our ambition. The work happening in our hills and hollers matters beyond these mountains, and we intend to make that case.

The Heart of It

Every program, partnership, and conversation we have comes back to one idea: reclaiming agency. The belief that no matter what someone has been through, they have the capacity to solve problems, create value, and build a future they've chosen.

That's what recovery looks like to us, and that's what we're here to support.
